Practicing Self-Compassion

In order to understand self-compassion, it’s necessary to first define compassion. Compassion is the ability  to understand someone’s suffering. It’s feeling empathy for another by being able to put yourself in their shoes and feel their emotional pain.

Now, take this approach towards yourself.

Acknowledge how you feel in the moment while being open-hearted to yourself—knowing that being imperfect is being human. Strive towards being authentic with yourself. Practicing self-compassion is noticing your own suffering from your judgments and criticisms. Practice being loving and kind to yourself everyday.

You deserve this.

You are worthy.

You are enough.

Three Reasons Why People Fail at Self-Compassion

  1. You are afraid you will become more self indulgent.
  2. You were taught to be self critical with the idea that this will motivate you.
  3. You were taught that to suffer is the way to be complete.

Remember if we can extend compassion and kindness to others then why is it so hard to show self-compassion?  It’s because we often stumble under one of these three reasons…or excuses.  It’s time to say good-bye to these limiting beliefs.

Moving Forward with Love and Kindness

Recognize that no one is perfect.  I encourage you to accept and to cherish who you are.  Take a realistic look in the mirror and make a conscious decision to accept, to be kind, to be understanding, and to be loving towards the person you see reflected back to you.
