Looking at Your Wardrobe in a Deeper Way

Some like shopping and know exactly which pieces of clothing reflect their inner being and look best on their shape while others dread and avoid shopping at all costs. Let’s turn things around by diving deeper into the way you’re viewing your wardrobe.

Did you know your closet should (and can) support not only how you look but who you are deep in your core? And this can be achieved on a budget—once you know yourself better you will make smarter shopping purchases and love everything in your closet in ways you never thought possible.

The secret to who you are can be showcased when you work with a style consultant such as my podcast guest Kathleen Audet. Kathleen joined me on my Balanced Living for Busy Professionals podcast, episode Craft Your Unique Dressing Style: Work From The Inside and Out. In this episode we chatted about uncovering who you are and having your clothing magnify this person in the fullest—creating a powerful personal appearance plus finding your authentic image.

Dressing from the Inside Out

Your image is something those around you will see whether you want them to or not. With each piece of clothing you wear you are giving a message to people without uttering a single word. Look at what you’re wearing in this moment. Is your outfit speaking a non-verbal communication to the world that truly reflects the you deep inside? If not, keep reading.

An example of someone dressing opposite of who they are would be an extroverted person who is a leader in their industry with a vibrant personality who often shows up wearing ill-fitting clothing in drab, dull shades of gray, brown, or black. The clothes aren’t reflecting the polished well-spoken person oozing with energy brought on by their personality and information they are passionate about sharing. It’s plain to see how the outer appearance isn’t matching with who this person is inside.

If this person likes the color black, for instance, then the fashion fix could be adding pops of color through their accessories—jewelry, shoes, and/or a scarf. Additionally, making certain the clothing fit compliments their shape regardless of someone’s actual body size will make the person feel confident and fabulous in what they are wearing. Everyone wants to feel good about the clothes they wear. It’s all in how a piece of clothing fits your body.

Dressing with Confidence

Would you be surprised to learn the average person only wears 20-25% of what they own? The other 75-80% needs to go. These items are not being worn and could be replaced with select outfits which can be matched in multiple ways to other key pieces. Having some basic foundation pieces such as a black blazer will be worth the investment and it’s mixed and matched with other tops or bottoms. The idea is to build a wardrobe you love and which works for you. If you’re thinking it’s a black blazer and everyone has one never forget how it fits. The blazer cut and fit will set it apart from others and reflect your personal style. The magic is in both color and fit…always.

As you go through your clothing to narrow down which pieces you absolutely love and which look good on you in the end you will have a bigger view of who you are and which clothing reflects this. Then when you open your closet door to select an outfit you will be able to get dressed easily, confidently, and embrace being authentic in who you are.

Try to always choose comfort. Steer towards your favorite colors which compliment your features. Think about the color of your eyes, skin tone, your lip color, and the highlights in your hair. Working with this color palette choose five or six colors to become your signature hues.

Women tend to change up their personal colors a bit and will start to see differences in how they look which sparks a little creativity. Focus on both color and fit and you will be starting in a great place towards revealing who you are plus wearing it well.

It’s been great talking about dressing from the inside out and what it means to tap into your personal style in a deeper way to influence other areas of your being. To continue the conversation, reach out to me for a 1:1 consulting session.
